Winter Break

It’s been a lazy winter break for our home. We’ve been cooped up at home with the constant rain. Watched movies, played board games, camped out in front of the fireplace. Sounds pretty nice doesn’t it ?? Except my once again full blown upper respiratory infection !! Oh yes !! Along with gifts galore it seems Santa gifted us the cold virus in abundance too. On 26th morning, I woke up with a sore throat and hubby seemed to be sneezing since the wee morning hours. Just when I was beginning to process that both of us were down with a cold, I heard footsteps and looking out of the covers I saw Daughter’s puffy face. Just as she climbed in between the both of us as she sometimes likes to, I could feel her burning skin. Thankfully the doctors office was open and hubby took her without delay as at that point he seemed to be doing better than me. Luckily the doctor started her on antibiotics before things got too worse.
By late afternoon, she seemed to be doing a lot better and I was all huddled in bed under 3 covers getting chills like never before and my temperature was around 104. Yeah !! I know wonderful way of spending the holidays 😦 !! Anyway now both of us are on antibiotics and she is doing much better. As for me, the doctor said I should be better in a couple of days.
But whatever comes, we were not giving up on having a good time. So what, we are sick !! That ain’t gonna stop us. That’s where the board games, music and lots of yummy food come in handy ( even though I really don’t have much of an appetite ). Not the most perfect break but it could have been much worse !! But we still have till the end of the week to make up for lost time.
In other news, I’ll be participating in the Blogathon 2016. I’m happy to say this will be my third year. I love it because I hope to read so many of my favorite bloggers who are on a sabbatical for whatever reasons. And after the long holiday season, I tend to feel so low and this gives the perfect reason to have something to look forward to. So if you guys have not already joined in the fun, hop on to Maya’s blog for all the details.
Signing off with wishing all of you a blessed new year. Hope you get all that your heart desires and much much more !! Will see you guys right here on the 1st. Bye bye !!

And it’s almost Christmas!!

Does it feel like December in your neck of the woods ?? Well, it certainly doesn’t feel here. We’ve hardly had any snow this season and while there is a chill in the air it’s nowhere as frigid as this time of the year usually is. But hey I’m not complaining!! If it wasn’t for the Christmas lights dotting the neighborhood and holiday music constantly on the radio, it would not seem like Christmas time at all. There is so much of excitement and craziness during around this time. But luckily we are done with all the shopping and most of the gifts are under the tree. All waiting for Christmas morning when impatient hands will tear away the wrappers. If Daughter has her way, we would have already opened up all the gifts.    Our tree !!

 The presents !!

 Our house in Christmas spirit!!

I think this is the first year, where we are really trying her patience by putting the gifts under the tree days in advance and she doesn’t have a clue what we’ve got for her :-). It’s also important to note that Daughter’s school has holiday shopping at school where the kids can do their own little shopping. And needless to say that this little missy made her own budget and did a little Christmas shopping for mommy and daddy 🙂 .

Yesterday there was a winter party at Daughter’s class in which I volunteered. I was supposed to do one craft with the kids and accordingly get all the supplies for the kids. To say I’m challenged in terms of crafts and creativity will be an understatement !! When I was given the responsibility of the craft workshop, I thought it’s the biggest joke. Daughter almost convinced me to exchange my duty, such is her confidence where me and crafts are concerned 😦 . But I looked up on the internet and found one which I thought I could manage with a bunch of 7 year olds. So my project was to decorate a bag of reindeer food (oats). I basically made little baggies of oats. The kids decorated them with eyes, red nose and antlers. I also found a neat poem to go along with the bags. I know there are some super creative artsy-crafty moms out there but trust me that’s the best I could do. So don’t laugh at me !! But the kids were super excited and loved that they could take the reindeer food home so that they could sprinkle it for the reindeer on Christmas Eve. By the end of the activity my Daughter had a proud look on her face since her friends said they had loads of fun at my workshop. So I was a happy mom 🙂 .

  The project!!

Today is the first day of winter break for Daughter and the hubby has his last working day tomorrow. Both of them are off till the 4th !! So yippee !! I was so looking forward to this long break when both my love bugs will be home. We don’t have any specific plans for the holidays. Will just take each day at a time. Few days back, I asked Daughter if there was anything particularly that she would like to do during her break and to that her answer was she wants to have a board game night and a movie night with popcorn by the fireplace. Well those are exactly the kind of nights that I’m hoping for. Loads of quality family time.
So what plans do all of you have this holiday season ?? Before I sign off want to wish each of of you a blessed and happy holidays !!

My kind of weekend

The last weekend was one just the way I like. It had a dinner party, loads of family time, and some hubby-and-me-time. It was one where a lot of work was done but there was also lots of time to sit by the fire and sip some wine. This year weather has been pretty mild especially for this time of the year for those of us in the northeast.
The weekend started with us going for a dinner at a friend’s place. The unsocial person that I am, complained and cribbed for a while because after back to back gatherings I was in no mood to socialize. But as always the little butterfly of our life a.k.a Daughter was all enthusiastic and full of energy knowing we have an invite. This 7 year old’s energy can be infectious and more often than not is enough for us to join in the mood. Right after coming from school, clothes were laid out on bed, shower was done without a fuss and basically she was dressed by 5 while I was still struggling on what to wear. Anyway, I was dressed in no time once I made up my mind on the clothes. Because all I do is wear some light foundation followed by eyeliner and lipstick. The foundation is my new addition, so that takes me a bit to even out the skin tone. And once that’s done, all it takes is five minutes for the rest. It was a dinner invitation but I had decided on making a Bengali dessert called ‘mishti doi’ or sweetened yogurt. So by 6, off we packed our selves in the car. It was a nice evening and all of us had a pretty good time with delicious South Indian food. It was yummy and we ate like there was no tomorrow.
Saturday, hubby worked in the morning and I was up by 6:30 and that to me is pretty-darn early for a weekend morning. So I decided to treat my loves with their favorite breakfast of pancakes and sausage. Needless to say the gesture was very much appreciated. Then hubby and Daughter went out for a couple of hours for a daddy-daughter date. I talked to my mum for sometime and then did some housework and some cooking. Soon the duo called me and said that they were coming home to pick me up for lunch since both were missing me. Of course it was an aawww moment and I was pretty much reduced to a lump of mush. After lunch, we went out for the Peanuts movie. We got back home late evening and the rest was dinner, bath time and bedtime for Daughter. It was after she went to bed that hubby and I got some quality us-time 🙂 .
Sunday dawned bright and sunny. We decorated our front porch with Christmas lights. Lazed out in the sun for sometime each doing our own little thing. Daughter read sitting at her favorite spot. I did some weeding and hubby cleaned the garage. You might call me nuts but I love these sort of companionable silence where each is working on her own yet there is harmony somewhere. It was definitely a touchwood moment for me since a lot of our friends are going through marital problems and I seem so content with my life with just the three of us in it. I don’t know if I make sense or not. Soon it was Daughter’s best friend’s birthday party and I had been hearing about it since a month. After dropping her at her friend’s house for the party, hubby and I completed our weekly grocery. And after getting back home, it was bedtime routine for Daughter once again. Hubby took care of that while I made some scrumptious crab curry for our dinner.
It was a very relaxing weekend for us. I think all of us are recharged and fresh to deal with the weak ahead. Now it’s the end of Monday and my mental countdown for another expected laid back weekend has started. Is it me or are there others too who are ready for the weekend just after Monday ???!!!!

Fun, Feast & Friends !!!

What a busy week it was !!! So this year we had thanksgiving at our house. And to say the days leading up to it were crazy busy, would really be an understatement. The hubby has his 4 very close friends living in the neighboring states and we have been trying to make thanksgiving a tradition of sorts !! Each year, someone is hosting the feast. And this year it was our turn.If any of you have hosted a thanksgiving feast, you know how daunting it can be. But if you need to host the feast for some 18 people and have house guests in the days leading up to as well as after, trust me you will be cooking not only in your waking hours but also in your sleep.
But having said that, I can’t deny what fun it was either. Sure we were sleep deprived and stressed to the brim but the laughter and chatter made up for it. The kids had an amazing time. I must say they all behaved very well. Didn’t fight too much. These really are a bunch of good kids !! And they also put up a show for the adults after the thanksgiving feast. It was wonderful to watch them first do a talent show and later it was followed by a play. The script of the play was written by them too. In the end, it was an awesome performance. Kudos to them for their cumulative effort !! I think it was a proud moment for all the parents. These are kids whom we have seen and held since they were little babies, and now they are all so grown up.

Of course a thanksgiving post cannot be complete without noting down things that I’m truly thankful for. And as always my list tops with the three people, I’m blessed to have in my life. My mum, my Daughter and my rock, my anchor, my love, my support system- my hubby. I also feel blessed to have these awesome group of friends.

   The spread !!

 Turkey Time !!

Anyway all good things come to an end. And this was no different. Saturday after having an elaborate lunch, we waved our goodbyes to everyone. By then I had a pounding headache, but the house was in a total mess. The hubby and I being the kind of people we are, we knew there was no was we could sleep unless the house was back in order. So we worked in unison till all the sheets and towels changed and put in the washer, the bathrooms cleaned and the whole house vacuumed. Daughter helped us too by putting all the toys and books away. It was almost 6 when all of us took a shower and put our feet up.
Since then, I have been down with a severe upper bronchial infection. But I thank God that this happened after everything happened smoothly. At least now I have the luxury to lay in bed and type away sipping ginger tea and having a box of Kleenex by my side. I just hope this bug leaves the house without getting close to the hubby or the Daughter !!
